The Opportunity
We worked alongside director Howard J. Davis (aka HAUI) and producer Jack Fox on their feature documentary debut film Mixed↑, for the films launch on OUTtv and its festival run. We liaised with the filmmaker, the network and the festivals to ensure the film received the coverage it deserved. We created a targeted media strategy which include outreach to international arts organizations, entertainment & industry media as well targeted outreach to diverse writers and those interested in the intersections of race, gender and representation in the arts. The team is currently getting ready to launch in the UK, New Zealand and more countries around the world.
The Results
We were able to work alongside the team to secure and coordinate interviews with outlets include The Root, Stir Vancouver, Creative BC, This, Hollywood North Magazine, Toronto Guardian, We are Entertainment Magazine, Xtra Magazine and many more.
“Mixed↑ turns the search for identity into a provocative and artful experiment. Filmmaker Howard J. Davis fluidly mixes the personal and historical with home movies, text, performance art, and more…In it, the artist fluidly connects history, etimology, home movies, and autobiography to show that in a society that prizes homogeneity, people of mixed cultural backgrounds are often treated as “diluted” or somehow impure.
HAUI’s narration might be best described as stream-of-consciousness and spoken word. The overall aesthetic is a wild pastiche—a collaging that’s well suited to the ways race can mesh beyond defined borders. In form, as much as in content, HAUI challenges traditional perspectives. And in a world that’s grappling with issues of race right now, it’s a thought-provoking, experimental call to action.” — Janet Smith, Stir
MIXED↑ Synopsis
MixedUp follows Howard J Davis aka Haui in his feature film directing debut, as he navigates being BIPOC and LGTBQ+. Haui's mixed-up manifesto demands that we celebrate the existence of being "other" on the journey to find inner cohesion.
